Voluntary task force to help doctors’ mental health

  • A voluntary task force has been set up by The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) to help doctors and medical professionals to deal with mental stress.
  • For the past few years, there is an alarming situation regarding doctors mental health after seeing the increasing number of suicides and other mental health issues among doctors.
  • This task force comprises Resident doctors, psychiatrists,physiologists to create ideas and help doctors in managing stress and mental health issues.
  • Due to hectic schedules and long duty hours without a single break doctors get overburdened. This leads to stress which causes mental health issues and suicidal nature.
  • The main idea behind this task force is to bring unity among doctors and medical practitioners and to find solutions regarding mental health issues.
  • The association has also urged the juniors if they face any stress and mental health issues they must approach their seniors.
  • The association also suggested the government regarding providing a mental health wellness center in every medical institution.
  • It also demanded that every medical institute must provide a helpline number to their students for getting any help regarding mental health and stress.
  • A study titled Suicide among healthcare professionals — An Indian perspective concluded in 2022 stated that the main cause behind the stress and mental health issues of doctors is academic stress.
  • Long duty hours and not taking a break is harmful to mental health and leads to stress. This task force is dedicated to these above stated issues and will come up with solutions which will be implemented soon.
